WAAAY BACK last year, Mr. Graham himself was nice enough to come to the boards and pitch us the concept for this show, which premeires tonight at 7:00 on Nick.
here's a backstory:
"Wind. Earth. Fire. Air. Only the Avatar was the master of all four elements. Only he could stop the ruthless Fire Nation from conquering the world. But when the world needed him most, he disappeared. Until now... On the South Pole, a lone Water Tribe village struggles to survive. It's here that a young Waterbender Katara and her warrior brother Sakka rescue a strange boy named Aang from a cavernous iceberg. Not only is Aang an Airbender - a race of people no one has seen in a century - but they soon discover Aang is the long lost Avatar. Now it's up to Katara and Sakka to make sure Aang faces his destiny to save the tribe - and himself."
The art, and animation is VERY well drawn, it doesn't look too anime-like, yet it's not too disney-fied either. The premieres and promos almost look movie-like.
and there's something that the plot and art kinda reminds me of..
a premise for a *CERTAIN* game series we've all known to come and love.
Hmm...

I like the art style pretty much well. the small jokes so far are pretty typical in today's cartoon-fare, so nothing majorly really stands out...

I just finished watching it, and I must say, it was pretty awsome. The animation was well-done and the story seems to have hooked me in, and I hope to see more of it this Friday. Yes, definiatly unlike Nick's other cartoons.

Oh my goodness Zigmoose is still alive!
I knew you guys would have a thread on this. I just watched it, and it's good. Better than I thought it would be at least. The elemental theme sounds like somewhat of a rip-off of the little known video game Azurik, but there's nothing wrong with sharing a fun theme. Furthermore, it actually made me laugh, which is something very rare for Nicelodeon's recent showcase. All I can say is that I have competition against Stargate for the Friday at 8 block.
I shall now return to hibernation.

I...really don't know about the time slot, guys. it's kinda like...after prime-time, when all the kiddies go to bed, or teen people get ready to go out for friday night parties.
i guess they're marketing to an older audience?

Also, does anyone know if it will be in full-hour blocks of 2 chapters (30 minute "episodes" each chapter) or just one chapter (30 minutes per epp) during regular showing on fridays?

Better than 8:00 or 9:00, like Invader Zim ended up with.

I just didn't really like the fact that everyone knew off the bat that he was the avatar. and Katara's brother bugged me. It's a pretty good show, and it kept me interested most of the time (which is cool, since I can never really pay attention to anything that has a lasting plot). Studio ghibli is exactly 10000000000000000 times better than nickelodeon.
Just because it looks like anime it doesn't make it different or more artistic.
I think the art is much like jackie chan adventures, honestly - in movement. (which is much better than teen titans, to me anyway, but still not anime-quality)
I did like it, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. I don't like video game plots of any kind and honestly the whole premise sounded completely silly to me - what can I say, I'm not a gamer. BUT. As Ami sez, the animals are so adorably hypnotically cute I really can't resisit. And while the flow seems kinda choppy to me at times, it looks like real work was put into it and it has great potential.
The only character I like is the main one - which is opposite most entertainment for me, since usually I love everyone but the protagonist. (the first thing that comes to mind as an example is Dogma. ^_^')?
Just because it looks like anime it doesn't make it different or more artistic.
I don't think that's what everyone meant when they were talking about the animation of the show. The point is, the movements of the characters and everything else was just way better than what most studios have tried to animate out of using anime style. Not to mention it sticks out from other Nickolodeon cartoons.

kudos for nick making a cartoon that appeals to older audiences.....only if they explicitly plan for it.

The weird thing is that they planned to make invader zim for adults audiences also. They came up to jhonen and told him they wanted a block of edgy cartoons for nickelodeon like adult swim. All they managed to do was make the little edgyness symbol with their fingers. I read this in an interveiw but I forget which one...
Oh and maxx, I was reffering to all the comments that it's nice to see nickelodeon doing something different. They aren't doing anything different, they're jumping on the latest bandwagon. But I don't really care how original the style is. I just think it was too predictable. I didn't watch the whole episode but I bet anything the characters flew away on the miyazaki-ish thing and got into some kind of battle.
Just finished episode 3. Wow, we see alot of loss and emotion in this one, we even get some flashbacks of Aang's past. This show seems to be really picking up, I also like the new animal character Momo, the little flying Lemur.

Next Episode is titled: The Warriors of Kyoshi
Description: The group quickly understands the importance of hiding Aang's identity when Zuko-in his ongoing hunt for the Avatar- attacks an island untouched by the war. Feeling ignored by Katara, Aang goes to great lengths to get her attention, including riding the giant Koi of Kyoshi Island. When the locals discover that Aang is the Avatar, the young girls of the town treat Aang like a celebrity, following him wherever he goes. Katara claims that she is not jealous, but Aang thinks otherwise. Meanwhile, Sokka faces his pre-conceived ideas about women when a female warrior named Suki beats him in a fight.

I watched the third chapter today. I thought it was okay, I'm not a big fan of the anime style, but it was nice. I nice deviant from all the blocky other stuff Nick plays. This one was much more fluid and well set. Characters were good, good design, somewhat of a good interaction between them. The humor that was in the show was forced, it seemed that way at least. I would like to see the first two chapters so I can get the whole story so far. It was too short, an hour would be a better placement for it. The story was somewhat rushed by the means of a half hour time slot. Overall I give the show a B. Good for teens, kids, and fans of anime.
On another note, how do I download the torrents for chapeter 1&2? I tried at the site but there was not immediate visable DOWNLOAD button or option.
Create an account there. This is a damn good BitTorrent site, with a ton of stuff in all kinds of categories. When you do that, you'll see a link before "Extra Information".

sup, 45? it's been...a while.
so, guys, i have never heard of this avatar thing. i never watch tv anymore. can i get a quick non-insider summary of the plot? none of this is making any sense to me.
fantasy world - a young kid is supposed to save the world by ending all wars between the tribes, he's got TEH MAGIC P0W3RZ and all. A couple other kids help him. That's basically it - the important part of this show (to me anyway) is the kid's attitude toward it all. He was pretty happy-go-lucky. Nice change from the usual melodrama...
I didn't see eppy3 tho so if the mood has changed any, I wouldn't know about it.

Actually, the whole thing looks really Miyazaki-esque...
I take that as meaning soft-edged characters, drawn more like real humans, not so angular, and without those incredibly large eyes that characterize anime. And a lot of attention paid to background images.
The Final Authority on new cartoons is my two boys. They have already made Avatar a 'can't miss' in their overly packed TV schedule. Something they will plan around, or drop whatever they are doing to watch. As for me, I like what I see so far. The story line holds my interest, and the violence is reigned in. It really matters when somebody dies, like when Aang discovers his mentor's body. Somebody (Taxy?) said they are going to have to kill someone eventually, but I don't think so. There are other ways to resolve the conflicts.
(edit) implode, a discussion forum might be a good idea. It could give us a new purpose in life ;)
Davey Rootbeer
03-16-2005, 08:00 AM
When i was at Taxy's dorm, we watched a rerun of the third episode, and the new "at the time" fourth. we had a long, interesting conversation about artistic techniques, lighting styles setting mood, shading, intentional references, transitional mechanisms, and character development.
...and we both said "Uhhh......?" When Aang said to Sokka at the beginning of episode 4, "You won't need pants where WE'RE going!"
^_^ nope, never said anything about death. Sounds like the kinda thing I would say.
I will say it doesn't interest me as much as Zim did...but a part of that is just development of style I think. I didn't start watching zim until later, when there was a really good rythm working, if that makes sense. I feel like they'll get that with avatar but haven't yet just cuz it's new and all. That and, I've always been a little more interested in sci fi than fantasy. I love both but if I HAD to choose, I think I'd choose sci fi.
I'm loving moments right now - like when they're chasing momo and suddenly aang's running on the wall, how they showed that. (yes, I know my priorities are WAY off, but I still obsess less over what's shown, and more over HOW it's shown. *meep*)
Peace always gets me right here *thumps chest*. :3 Yeee. Looking forward to the rest of the story. Heh, I haven't turned on the tv in months, and now I'm turning it on once a week. I suppose that says something.

03-16-2005, 11:44 AM
Somebody (Taxy?) said they are going to have to kill someone eventually, but I don't think so. There are other ways to resolve the conflicts. that was me, but let me explain - i don't mean the main cast of characters. it's fairly safe to assume that zuko isn't going to kill aang in the seventh episode and turn the next 45 episodes into a giant chase scene between katara and a fire nation ship. but, on the whole, it seems like the whole concept of "death" and genocide is kind of unavoidable when a major tenet of your storyline is that one faction of people is out to annihilate everyone else.
so i don't mean specific DEATH as much as i do implied references to death. they've already done it - the southern air temple episode, with the skeleton of aang's monk mentor and the pile of discarded fire nation helmets. if the fire nation has really been at this for over 100 years, i'm thinking that they'll probably have to flash back to violent scenes like this more and more to explain the storyline, unless the fire nation's done a really shitty job of exterminating people outside of the airbenders. and it'll just be interesting to see how they go about doing so, considering that no one dies on nickelodeon without herb & company's specific instruction.
ah! can't wait 'til friday. it's nice to give a damn about a telestory again.

What the hell is so special about Cartoon Netowrk, is it the next MTV now? I really don't see anything wrong with shows that use the word "sex" and other small prefixes in them. WB's Pokemon: The movie has the word "sex" in it, but only applying to gender, rather than a meaning of sexual reproduction.
As long as the meanings are separate, what's the problem?

Just caught the big ass Avatar marithon, showed all episodes. Curently im running 6 torrents downloading them all. http://torrentspy.com nuh-uh, they didn't show the first one. i know, because it's the only one i haven't taped.
SO. now we have factual evidence of a "spirit world" (and the storylines will start rolling in from here, no doubt) and we KNOW that aang's final quest will be to defeat firelord whoever (zuko's dad, his name escapes me.) i'm really grooving on the way the storyline has been progressing - i'm betting that after aang speaks to roku, he'll recieve his instructions on how to master all the elements on his own and the trip to the north pole will continue as planned, with the eventual arrival and mastering of the skill (by both aang AND katara) signifying the end of the water chapter of the story.
and we know from earlier episodes that zuko does not care about the prosperity of the fire nation nearly as much as he cares about capturing the avatar and winning his father's favor, which will undoubtedly be a crucial plot point in the later episodes. if... we reach them. zuko doesn't seem to have a beef with aang other than "if i capture him, i can bring him to my father and he'll respect me again" which is making me increasingly impatient about WHEN they'll let us know exactly what he DID to get banished, in the first place. but that's good. it means i actually care about the progression of events, which is almost unheard of in the world of nickelodeon cartoons. i mean, he could have gone after them in the last episode, but he didn't, he went to rescue his uncle... so they seem to be making zuko a respectable antagonist - kind of the "nothing personal, buddy. just business." attitude that made mr. pink seem like the levelheaded character in reservoir dogs. of course, it's nick, so they really can't make the reccurring characters bloodthirsty assholes in the first place... but it works.
the next episode will be excellent. trying to cross fire nation lines with a fucking flying buffalo will fulfill the action portion of the show, and whatever avatar roku has to say will undoubtedly be the plot points on which they'll be building for the next run of shows.
...
stop laughing, i get it. :(
