View Full Version : I've betrayed humanity -- XBox buyage ensues

So, I finally did it. I feel dirty, but there's some awesome gameage to be had.
I traded in all my multi-platform games and got an XBox, since my PS2 is having it's menstrual period and lashes out randomly at passers by. Sony haven't responded to any support request e-mails, so I've decided that in spite of rocking, they suck (I'm not quite sure how that works, to be honest).
Anyway, I got KotOR, Shen Mue 2, Silent Hill 2 - Inner Fears, and the GTA box.
KotOR is pretty cool, but not as awesome as I was hoping. (payed like $60 or $70 all in all)
The GTA games have really fucked up controls in the beginning, but you get used to it (the "Classic" controls are so bad that they're unusable). They also look exactly like the PS2 games but with really nice reflection mapping.
Shen Mue 2 looks exactly like the Dreamcast version, and Silent Hill 2 is exactly the PS2 Director's Cut game but with longer loading times (it makes no sense at all, the XBox should handle it a LOT faster).
How long is KotOR and what's so good about it? So far it just feels like a mix between an action game and Baldur's Gate, only with more fetch-quests. Don't get me wrong, it feels very polished, I just have no idea what's that ground-breakingly awesome about it.

So, I finally did it. I feel dirty
as you should. =P
i played some X Box at AnimeBoston, and it felt so dirty. i can't stop washing my hands now.
i don't like the controller. not only was it GINORMOUS but the button layout was awkward. it might have been the one i was using, but there wasn't too much give in the buttons--i couldn't tell if i had pressed one or not.
so popping X box cherry + popping Dead or Alive 5 cherry (which is an awesome game, though, is it out for 'cube?) + not having an instruction manual = getting owned by Aph.
this thread might move if the only replies that come up aren't about KotOR (it took me a while to figure out you meant "Knights of the Old Republic," haha) and are just "lolz xbox sux." we'll see how it plays out.
PS: it's "paid." =P
PPS: i would have just held out for the Revolution.

The Controller S thing is pretty much the same size as a Dreamcast controller, really, or maybe a bit smaller.
And Revolution will be awesome, in a year and a half. This is the only way to enjoy San Andreas with replay goodness, Episode 3 without shitty graphics, Shen Mue 3, and so on. I'm still keeping my Gamecube and getting games for that, probably more than for XBox. =P

Hey, I want an Xbox like nobody's business. I'm just trying to decide if I want to wait for the next gen one or not. I really need to get back into console gaming -- and this time I can actually say "it's for school". HA HA.
But now I have this new-fangled PSP to occupy me for a while. Boy howdy, this thing comes fully loaded. The only thing I could ask for is lower prices for the memory cards (the MP3 feature is kind of useless until it can compete with the iPod in terms of capacity and playlisting, and the largest Duo card they make is 1G for around 100 bucks a pop. Ouch.) or at least something that'll let me use my lamesauce non-Duo sticks that I have lying around for my digital camera. I've seen people already put out some harware hacks for that, but I'm holding out until the write-up doesn't include the words "wiggle it until it reads".
Oh yeah. And -- WiFi. The Wipeout browser's awesome (it even works with Java!) but I think it'd be just that much keener if I could use it down at the coffee shop instead of just on my LAN.

Yeah, I was thinking of waiting for the next XBox since it'll probably be out by christmas, but Episode 3 and GTA:San Andreas made me not do that. I wanted some more games, also, but those are pretty much the reasons that completely and totally tipped the scale. GTA:San Andreas will have the one feature that will keep the game at an infinite playability value: Instant replay, which you can supposedly save on the harddrive and show to friends later.... or if you're like me you'll just drive around doing the wackiest stunts possible and then viewing them from various angles.
And hey, if XBox 2 is backwards compatible, then I have a cheap little Linux box to use as a multimedia player.

I hate Xbox...like, a lot. Almost all the games are for pc. Infact, all of them are. Even ones Xbox doesn't have, like GTA. The only game I consider playing on it is Ninja Gaiden, and Halo. Halo is basically the only game Microsoft had to show for all these years. It was their prime game, especially for advertising. Well, it's pretty good I can admit, but it's not a reason to shit your pants over. It's and FPS. There are a lot others out there.
Secondly, PS2 and Gamecube are classics. Xbox had it's first try ever in the console market, and they ended making a PC in a box. Ps2 and GC keep it simple, and the graphics may not be as good as Xbox, but their games aren't all dogshit. I've found an Xbox game for a dollar at blockbuster one time...Yes...A dollar.
Gamecube has Resident Evil 4 (best game in the fucking world) and Ikaruga. Ps2 has GTA, rachet and clank, FF, ect. Xbox has nothing to show for, like I said. Except for unoriginal games. They try too damn hard to be a powerful console. They spend all their system hardware on graphics and speed. No one cares really. I'm content with Sony. Always have been. So I'll most likely get PS3 when it comes out. I've already heard some of the games coming out for it, and I'm most interested in Sony's line-up. I'm not too thrilled about playing Halo over and over.
So yeah. GBA is cool too.
Xbox is basically a mistake.

I was considering buying an XBox at first, and it was initially going to be my prefered purchase. However, as time went on, I realized that the XBox didn't really have enough games that interested me. Sure, it has a crapload of FPS games, which I love, but I own most of them on the PC anyway, including Halo. FPS games alone weren't enough to interest me, in the end. After deciding I wouldn't get an XBox, I went for a Gamecube instead.
The reason why is simple: better games, although there are fewer of them; it was much cheaper, cheap enough that I could get two games, an extra controller, and a memory stick, even after purchasing the system; and it's a simple system that does one thing well: play games. After Sega and the Dreamcast died, I realized the closest console and company to my beloved Sega was Nintendo. They were the only company that still held onto the old console mentality that they helped pioneer. Sony and XBox are just companies making consoles, Sega and Nintendo actually believe in what they are doing and try to impress gamers while making enjoyable games at the same time.

because Sega and Nintendo are fucking old school, dude.
that's another thing--i prefer consoles made by people who know GAMING. people who know what kind of system will be good for a game, and who know their console well enough to design games suited for it. Microsoft is just shitting itself to get the leading edge on the technology for the purpose of impressing people and selling consoles, while Sony...i don't know about Sony. they make fucking everything. i don't trust anything from a company that makes everything.

I refuse to by an Xbox.
Seriosuly, there's nothing fantastic about it. What, you've got Halo and Halo 2. I admit, those games are fun, in the whole party mode sort of way. But if its party games you want, then get a Gamecube! Just off the top of my head, tehres the two greatest party games ever: Mario Kart Double Dash and Smash Brothers Melee.
And side from Halo, there's not other really decent Xbox only games. Splinter Cell you say? PS2, I reply. WHy? Because the PS2 has what the Xbox has, plus tons more. With established 3rd party support, all the good games are going to be made multi platform or PS2 only. It's kind of a no brainer.
Now, I'll admit, I got my GC because of my loyalty to Nintendo (Yeah, loyal to a company that doesnt know my name...real smart), but so far, I haven't been let down. Hell, Nintendo even earned more support with the releasing of the entire Resident Evil series, plus the two GC only games, 4 and Zero. So, to all those that say Nintendo is a kiddy company...go stand in front of one of those chainsaw guys, and tell me it's still a kid's console.

I...dunno. I've heard that none other than Hironobu Sakaguchi's been comissioned to make a couple of new RPG's for X-box.
HIRONOBU SAKAGUCHI, guys.

that sounds promising....but up until now, i haven't seen a single game on the xbox that has made me want to play it.
don't bring up halo....the only good thing about that game is Red vs Blue.
Fabel was a big disapointment from what i've seen and read about it....
so, i'll be waiting to see what sakaguchi can come up with, but until then, microsoft will have to do without my money yet again. (yay apple!)

as for PS2 vs X-Box...the reason he's even getting an X-Box is because his PS2 went all bitchy and not-working on him, and Sony didn't really try to fix it.

i loved my xbox. i'm not really into video games lately, though. i read books.
there was just something about it... i owned the pc versions of most of my xbox games, but there was somethign irresistable about kicking ass with a joystick on xbox live.

I think the joke about how there's only one good game for XBox is pretty much too late, there's a ton of exclusive stuff nowadays. Fable was way overhyped, yup, and I honestly think Halo sucks. If I ever buy it it's because I like Bungie and their stories.
I'll start getting playstation games again when the PS3 has proven itself. Until then it's the Cube and the Box.

Hey guys. Is it totally lame that I'm willing to buy an Xbox for GTA and Jet Set Radio Future alone?
It is, isn't it.

I think I'm even lamer because what I really want is a game where some futuristic, cel-shaded hooligans skate around town graffiti-ing up the place. But it's for great justice, so it's okay somehow.
Anybody know if that new-fangled Xbox2 is gonna be backward compatible? I am led to believe that it may have a webcam.

The features of the next XBox will be revealed live on MTV.... it's a sad day for humanity.
And yes, GTA is one of the main reasons. I'm gonna enjoy having an XBox now that I do... have one... though. KotOR is turning out pretty awesomely.

Well depends on which Xbox 2 you get. You get the shitty cheap one for like 300 bucks, that will just play Xbox 2 games and have live, almost none of the things on the curent Xbox. If you want a hardrive, backwards compatablity, and everything else you need to buy the platinum edition. Which that will cost you approxamently $400+.

There are no official statements about it, it's just speculation so far.
Compare these two:

The president of Nintendo announced that Revolution will be backwards compatible.

Speculative news site said that because of various things Microsoft has done it's likely that there will be two versions of the next XBox, just like rumors went around about the PS3 coming in one, two or even three versions a year ago.

Unless you've actually seen an official statement, the latter doesn't sound very likely.

Well, I know its not offical, but a lot of gaming sites have just assumed it to be true. OSrry, I guess we will just have to wait untill MTV shows it.

Hmm, I think I'll hook my Dreamcast up and play me some Jet Grind Radio now.
Mecha Wolf

I should get Jet Set Radio Future sometime, the DC version was very cool.
I also take back most things bad I've said about the Xbox, I'm loving it somethin' good. The harddrive is definitely worth the higher price, no need for new memory cards ever.
The CD ripping thing is also turning out to be pretty cool. In most games it's a pretty pointless feature, but in GTA it works with the in game CD changer and nifty fade effects when you do stunts.
Oh, and KotOR rocks a lot more than I thought, I love being a dark jedi, haha. Two lightsabers and Force Choke is all a Mecha needs to be a happy wolf.
