okay, so every time i try to open windows media player, i get this little popup:

only way i can close it is by shutting down a process called ptf_0002.exe and of course, wmp won't run.

anything i can do to fix this? i just ran spybot, and it picked up nothing, and i ran trendmicro's virus/spyware thingy, it picked up a few (unrelated) things and fixed them..but i still have this problem.

help?

but davey! your browser clamors for so much MORE. who are you to stand in the way of the enhancement process?

dunno. i'd probably just click the damned thing and take my chances. anything about it on the WMP site?

Uninstall windows media player and download/reinstall from the Microsoft site. Or you might just be able to do a fresh install without uninstalling.

Also, check you registry.

uh, what am i checking my registry for, specifically?

Anything that looks similar to the process name.

I would look first under HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows Media

Davey, don't take anything out of your registry without backing it up, first. Remember how good backups are, and how sad we get when we don't have them? Yeah.

Davey Rootbeer

Yeah, i know.

Don't see anything in there, anyway. I'm probably not looking in the right place. :/

is there anyway to like, search regedit for an indivisual process?

Edit: aha, i found it in MUIcache in temp internet files.

..wait, huh? uh...what now?

More specifically...it's in hkey_users --> s1521-514 (bunch of numbers) --> software --> microsoft --> windows --> Shellnoroam --> MUIcache

..and shouldn't i like..be in safemode for this, since i'm running XP?

i punch my windows registry in the kidneys at least five times a day, and nothing can really ruin windows for me any more than the way it came out of the box. you're pretty much safe in the registry as long as you don't touch any system folders. i've become rather accustomed to yanking things out of there lately. it's the only real way to get rid of a lot of junk that ends up on your computer.

(this may sound reckless, but i actually do know what i'm doing. :o)

Tom is correct, Just dont fuck with system folders and you should be fine.

So have you tried just uninstalling Windows Media Player and reinstalling it?

Edit: Also, of you're running WMP off a shortcut on the desktop/quicklaunch/stat menu, check to see it was hijacked by spyware and its just pointing that shortcut to a new program.

Yeah, that's what i thought at first too, but i tried to circumvent that by going directly to program files/windows media player, and that popup launches when i try to start the application itself, not a shortcut..

No dice.

spybot and trendmicro picked up nothing. :(

try going into c:/windows and looking for the folder.

AND DONT FUCKING USE SPYBOT, AS GREAT AS IT SOUNDS, IT PUTS SPYWARE ON YOUR PC.

Alot of undetectable spyware is hidden in your c:/windows.

I dont believe Im gonna recommend this, but the beta of the Microsoft anti-spyware program is actually decent. Its based off some top-rated, under-used program whos name escapes me at the moment.

Where the hell have you been? Windows Media Player has been un-uninstallable ever since the days of Windows 98.

What version of the player (8, 9, or 10) are you using Davey?

yeah, i've just been using winamp instead.

You can make Winamp grab the default things.

I don't like Winamp with video, so I use Media Player Classic, because it came with Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative.

Its called manually removing files/registry entries ...

Okay, something very odd is happening in addition.

I was watching the family guy movie about 2 days before this popup thing happened. and the audio was kinda wierd, the voice track, and the background music's volume was reversed somehow. the voices were really low, but the background music was really loud.

and now it's the same on my winamp. Not the popup, but what SHOULD be loud is now quiet, and what SHOULD be quiet is now loud. it's really fucking up my ears.

what the fuck?

Go to sound preferences and move the balance to the right or left or whatever.

Works for me.
