See, the second I saw the name of this thread, I thought "there is going to be a "your mom" type reference on the first page. I guaren-fucking-tee it, me." And while the thread was loading, I was all like "yeah, and it'll either be reef, or robot." And now that i have proven myself right, I am all like "yeah, that was the single most predictable outcome since 'War of the Worlds.'
you mean you read the book before you read the thread?

you mean you read the book before you read the thread?
the book was better.
No, I actually didn't bother to read the book until after I saw the thread. The book was pretty good, but it kept going into a bit more detail than I would have preferred. And the constant flashbacks were confusing as hell.
And tom, the thing you gotta understand is that the thread is simply based off of the original story in the book, it's not intended to replace the book itself. Of course the book was better, but you gotta just enjoy the thread for what it is.

I had Ham and scalloped potatoes for dinner ...
i don't know about that. i mean, the director had little vision and he always chooses the SAME actors. reef? he's been in EVERYTHING! the book had a lot of possibility. i think one would be right to be disappointed in the thread. its only saving grace is that it might attract more people to read the original book.
Well, a lot of points in the original story were left with some ambiguity to them, so there's some room for interpretation on a lot of things. Especially when it comes to things like sequence of events; books are capable of covering multiple overlapping events in a way that can't be as easily conveyed in movies and still have them make sense. Not to mention the complexity of the original story, some things just had to be glossed over in order to make it short enough. I mean, it'd be more true to the book if the thread took 3 hours to read start to finish, but who really wants to do that? Might as well just read the book.
I do agree that the casting could have been a little better thought out. I mean, Keanu Reeve would have made a much better "your mom" guy than reef. And Vile's walk on cameo was entirely unecessary. And I hated how the end credits purposefully had two songs cropped to fit in there, obviously just so they can add more content to the soundtrack CD. Psh.
it was just awfully two dimensional. there was no emotion. it was just mechanical. "what are you eating? -- I AM EATING THIS." where is the HUMANITY in that? where is the strife? the book made me feel something when i read it. i cried when the protagonist lost his wife and child during a horrid childbirth. i lept for joy when the prince finally escaped from his captors. but it was all just boiled down to, "what are you eating?" i think that it's more than "glossed over."

Yeah, but you gotta admit they recreated all of the major battle scenes pretty faithfully. And I think the location scout was dead on with the places they posted the thread from; they were perfectly recreated from the descriptions in the book. While I always like to use my own imagiantion for those sorts of things, some of the descriptionw as either too vague or too detailed, so the overal vision the author was trying to achieve was lost. The thread helped clear things up for me.
But yeah. I hear they've already got a sequel to this thread in the works, just because the first one was so successful. They'll just wind up mangling the story so they can cash in, greedy bastards...
But at least we have the 'what are youe ating right now' special edition 4 disc DVD to look forward to next fall. I hear a lot of the scenes that were cut due to time constraints will be reinstated in that release.

I enjoyed the characters (Vile, banky) added from the book into the thread, but I think they should have expanded on them more. The story, also, was way different than the continuity of the book, but that's to be expected and if you can embrace it it's easier to enjoy. It's too bad the author died before production began, I think if he would have worked on the movie it would be better and more foods would have been sampled. Still, I enjoyed the thread very much, if not for the Orbit, then for the snot. It turned out to meet my expectations.

Yeah, I didn't even mind how the snot subplot was made less signiicant in the thread than it was in the book. The snot subplot pretty much made the book, but even though it was pretty much reduced to a footnote in the movie, I'd say the cinematography and the way they story boarded the animated sequences especially made up for it. The original music blew me away, but I wish thread makers would rely less on licensed songs. Unless it's a very appropriate song, it usually just cheapens the experience. Which they managed to do a number of times throughout the thread, unfortunately...

Or the sort of euro-beat sounds they incorporated with celtic folk music for the scene where it is revealed that salmon makes banky sick. Genius.
The one thing I really didn't like, though, was the amount of comic relief they pushed onto the characters of mst3kman, töm, and Stage Beans. I mean, why is it that sometimes they interacted with the other charatcers normally while at the same time they seemed to be the only ones aware of the fourth wall? Repeated comments from them about the overall quality of the thread they are in were a bit humorous at first, but that kind of comic relief only seemed to cheapen the thread take on the story overall.

It sort of delves into it's own paradigm, doesn't it? Sort of like the salt box with the girl holding the salt box that has the same picture and on that box that the girl in the picture is holding is another picture of the girl, and so on. It's a very experimental approach, and though it wasn't done completely right, the effort is there and it did not end up that bad. Though I will agree with you, it did manage to cheapen the story. The thing was, the thread would not go on without the whole 'Self-Aware' story. It would lack a lot of heart without it.

Another thing I didn't like about the thread adaption of the book was just how LONG is was. Though Reverend's internal philosphical speculation from thoughout the book was well translated into a monologue later in the thread, I still think the ending should have come about a page sooner. Has anyone been to IGN lately? I heard they got beta screenshots from the licensed PS2 and Xbox 'what are you eating right now' games. Though, I bet they'll also make a crappy GBA sidescroller, too.
