yeah, it's a pretty common relaxation technique used for meditation/hypnosis/astral projection/trances/etc. while stuff like that is obviously of questionable origin/effectiveness, that technique alone works quite well to relax me.

Go outside and run around. Trust me. By the time you get back your bed will look like a beautiful sleeping woman, and you shall cuddle her allll night long.

I just lay in bed, awake, and do nothing. Just stay up and up and up. Tick away the minutes, because I know that I will eventually fall asleep.

Heh. That's basically my strategy. But mind numbing TV noises or music can help, too. It's just rather uncomfortable waking up the next day with headphone wires wrapped around your head and little foam things loose in your bed. (I want there to exist wireless headphones. Audio scientists, you have your mission.)
Sleeping pills do wonders.
I actually considered that once, but it seems like that could actually do more harm than good in the long run. My typical sleep cycle's unnatural enough as it is, but I don't wanna become dependant on chemicals to top it all off...

I find this works well. There is also the queer eye approach: smoke a bowl and rub one out. That'll put you right to sleep. There is also always getting more exercise during the day.

I have my radio play sweet, soft sounds next to me while I go to sleep. Now, I need the radio to play when I sleep:(.

It's hell when I travel, because I need a radio...and there is always the off chance the place I stay at will not have a radio/it will piss off the other people staying in the room. Pavlovian indeed.
At first I thought you said provolone, like the cheese. :o

Melatonin always puts me to sleep. It's a natural drug so it's not supposed to cause dependancy, but I don't want to take chances about it, so I avoid taking it every day. Usually I stay up watching dvds.

I only used them for 3-4 days to get into regular sleeping schedule and to help with a horrible case of insomnia.

i can only sleep well when the room temperature is 60 degrees or less. anything higher than that makes me all sweaty and i'll be tossing and turning the whole night.

Ugh, that can be me somenights. Like I walk from the hallway to my room, a few short inches, and there is this sudden increase in temperature. My room is actually a few degrees warmer than my hallway. Even when I keep the door open all day long. It's really weird. So I have to keep the AC on even on cool nights:(.
Though it hasn't worked recently, I've been able to get to sleep from time to time by concentrating on nothing. Normally this involves focusing on the emptiness of space-- just one empty point, lightyears away from any object, where nothing exists in it. Seems calming.
Alternatively, sleep has also been brought to me by focusing on the word "none", a silent, blank computer terminal, and the letter H. Results may vary.
(I want there to exist wireless headphones. Audio scientists, you have your mission.)There's always these (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0009N5MDI/qid=1125002867/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-5549059-7347100?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846). Quite expensive, but would be fun to show off...

I hate having AC or fans blowing directonly on me, so I have my fan propped up in the corner where it continues to circulate air but not blow directly on me while on my computer or in bed.

I too, am afflicted by this curse. I have to sleep beside an open window so that there's a breeze on me. :(

choking like how? does it feel like your throat is kinda closing up? because that happens to me a lot. usually if I lay on my side, it goes away. it's weird.

for me to sleep good, the overall temperature of the room MUST be "chilly". i like to snuggle up with blankets to stay warm: it uses up a lot of excess energy, and it helps me fall asleep a lot faster. the downside to this being that it's trhat much harder for me to throw open the covers and get out of bed when i wake up, because of all the cold air, etc.

Robot: Have you looked into the possibility that you may have acid reflux?
I have the same thing when i wake up from sleeping. it feels like i'm going to throw up for an hour or so after i wake up, every day.
they ran some tests, and found a couple of stress ulcers.
