Do you think someone's diet (http://www.pinc.com/healthnews/fishoils.html) can have a big impact on their personality, or are they making it up?
I have depression problems and asthma, it's strange to think both of those problems could be caused by a lack of fish.
I read another article yesterday that said depression is caused by kids controlling their emotions and not expressing happiness or sadness. They think depression can be cured with empathy. I think people who write articles like this don't really comprehend the problem. Being depressed isn't the same as being sad, you're not going to be cured by expressing yourself. There are way too many possible causes for depression. My dad recently found out he has a sinus problem in his forehead. He's getting weird bumps on his head, and he's started being very hopeless about everything, after a lifetime of being an optimist. He had to figure it out himself, he's had this problem for years and no one else diagnosed him correctly. He's going to have to get surgery. People shouldn't decide what someone's problem is and tell them what the magical solution is when the only proof they have that they're right is that they want to be right. I haven't seen evidence that empathy cured mental diseases.
Anyway I'm going to start eating fish. Fish are different than most animals, they're more like bugs, so eating them isn't as disgusting.
A while ago I used to take fish oil pills for about a month, some article said they where essential for the human brain, either they wern't specfic or I totally forgot what it said. I didn't notice any difference so I stopped.

hoshit. unhealthy food is bad for you. WHODA THUNK IT? i think there's a lot more to why people today are fat and depressed than just not eating a lot of fish.
of couse, with fish you have the possibility for lovely things like mercury poisoning, so. you can't win.
it seems like they're saying fish oil supplements are the silver bullet cure for a lot of stuff: depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, heart disease, cancer...too good to be true? i don't know.

fish have long been referred to as "Brain food" because they are high in a concentration of some kind of chemical that starts with P, and the brain has that same chemical, too. phos...phites?
a lot of freshwater lakes where fish are caught are polluted with mercury though, which is theorized as causing birth defects and mental conditions such as autism. (goddamn koba, beat me to it.)

have a spoonful of cod liver oil. it cures what ails ya! (Although i haven't heard that reference since the 1960's.)
Hey guys, remeber when coca-cola was supposed to be a wonder drug?
I'm allerngic to fish, anyway.
back to the topic. as far as nutritional value, you can get pretty much everything you need to get from meat in vegetables, beans, and fruits: you can drink milk or each cheese, or eat eggs, and it'll give you the what for.
so, i'm thinking maybe you mean VEGAN in the topic.
anything you eat has been pretty much polluted in some manner, by pesticides, growth drugs, or unintentional chemicals in groundwater and rain. over the last 50 years, male sperm count has dropped in HALF. and that's not just due to Mt. Dew.
when i wake up, i'll talk more.

back to the topic. as far as nutritional value, you can get pretty much everything you need to get from meat in vegetables, beans, and fruits: you can drink milk or each cheese, or eat eggs, and it'll give you the what for.According to that article you can't get omega 3 fatty acids from vegetarian diets.
Don't people have mercury in them anyway? Too much of anything can hurt you, but it's not that much of a risk. People became parinoid about mercury because they used to put it in people's fillings and stuff like that.

Yeah, because those Omega3 oils are kinda a neccessary thing to have. And the good ole' B-vitamins.
Don't feel bad about the fishies. They barely have a central nervous system, and are probably incapable of dreaming. That's like right next to rocks on the "ohmygawd, those poor little creatures" scale.
edit: the mercury in fish thing doesn't really apply unless you eat fish, like, every damn day. There's not that much in there, and mercury poisoning is a cumulative thing. You'd have to eat a fuckload of fish before you got to that stage.
Funfact, back when Ami was a vegetarian (not VEGAN, and doing a damn proper job of being a vegetarian, to boot), her hair began falling out. Research suggests that people with certain body and blood types just aren't cut out for getting what they need out of a vegetarian diet. I feel a lot better now that I'm back to feasting on raw bloody carcasses, and that goes for the depression I was experiencing back then too.
My parents have not been buying any meat products lately. All we have are these nasty Vegi Burgers :(. I only get a chance to actual food at school, and school food doesn't seem like food.
I don't know if it is unhealthy or not. You can always take vitamins.

Well I don't know about vegetarian being bad or harmful, though I'd imagine you'd be fine as long as you kept your diet balanced and ate other things to supplement the lack of meat.
However, diet does have an impact on a lot of things. My vegetable intake has gone down since I started cooking for myself and I've noticed that a lot more of my hair gets stuck in my brush. It's because of a lack of vegetables and I am going to start taking a multi-vitamin to combat it as well as just plain eating more veggies.
Carbs give you an enegry boost, but too much can make you lethargic. Diet could very well be part of the cause of depression. It's the source of everything that enters your body and makes it run. I can see where it would have an effect on body chemistry as well.

I never said stop eating, I was suggesting to take vitamins to help gain other nutrients that a person may lack. Supposeably you don't get enough calcium in your diet, you can always take some vitamins for it. It isn't exactly the same but it is next best thing, by better than nothing.

thats interesting
because i was like the exact oppositte or something. i gave up eating red meat and porkstuff since the last time it made me sick for like 4 days and it was horrible and bad.
but no one else got sick. so i think i just cant really handle a lot of meat. AND ANYWAY
i get sick like almost never now. annnndotherstuff.

You know, I still can't eat a lot of meat. It's basically limited to chicken and fish, because beef and pork pretty much make me immediately and horribly ill. It's like I lost some kind of tolerance for it after I weaned myself off of it.
But still. I can't do without the little bit of meat I do get, because, well... hair. And my nails start to break and I get all anemic and shit. Bleh.

yes, food definitely matter-of-factly can affect your mood. no doubt about it.
i'm a vegetarian for the most part, but occasionally when i'm at a friend's or grandmother's i will have some fish or chicken. i don't care for either. i quit red meat in 7th grade because it made me feel like crap and now i'd get sick if i ate it anyway.
but, anyway. it is possible to consume all the nurtrients you need on a vegan diet, i just wouldn't try it. especially where i live, there's very little selection in the right food groups to make up for it. i have a bit of a protein deficiency, but it doesn't bother me enough to do something about it. it's much easier to make do with a vegetarian diet and still eat things like eggs or yogurt. nuts, beans, and vitamin supplements are helpful even to meat eaters. just eating meat doesn't cover the things you can get from vegetables and nuts. there are different kids of protein and the ones we need most are actually not found in red meat.
so, guys. b12. gawd, i love me some b12.

there are plenty of ways to cook vegan. my grandmother bought a vegan cookbook for me and she uses it to cook food for herself because the meals are interesting and varied. seasonings and new combinations can add variety.
but you can say that about anything. it's a matter of opinion. steak and mashed potatoes is pretty boring to me.

also, semen has protein but not as much as tofu. didn't you read the nutritional facts (found on the underside of the shaft, half an inch up)? "THIS PRODUCT IS NOT A SIGNIFICANT SOURCE OF NUTRIENTS"

I've always taken vitamins, but there are no vitamins for carbs, protein, fat, and fiber, so you still have to watch what you eat.
I take Vitamins, and this like...super weight gain protein whey powder mix that has all my emino acids. Plus, another thing about the carbs, is you should bind them with protein(example Rice and beans) because as someone said, I forgot who, carbs make you lethargic. Well without protein, carbs make you sluggish...I dont know if their exact symonyms, but similar.
I havent read this whole thread, but here's just what I have to say: Eat lots and lots of soy products, seeing as how soy is the "miracle plant" that is like...miracley...and stuff. Its just REALLY good for you, even if your not vegan/vegetarian. You also should eat other protein substitutes, such as Falafel and Hummus(chick peas). I mean legumes are just EXCELLENT when your doing the meatless diet. Lets see...My recommendation is that if your still a teenager, dont go straight vegan, even though supporting dairy and eggs is supporting animal cruelty, as a teenager, more often than not, youre not going to have the self control to excercise, not load up on junk food, and eat the things your body needs. Milk and eggs are excellent(egg protein is the most easily processed protein by your body) for maintaing good health, and until you actually "grow up" enough to not load up on chips and candy, I say just stick with vegetarianism. Personally, i view as sort of a...journey. Just cut things out slowly, until you "progress the ranks" and make it to the highest point, AKA Pure veganism. To me, vegetarianism isnt only physical, but a spiritual journey, making yourself one with *cough* "mother nature". I hate to sound hippiesh, but thats what i view it as, and to me life is more of a spiritual journey.
So yes, theres my advice, even though it has nothing to do with the previous convos, its still part of the topic. For you people thinking about vegetariansim there you go, and for those skeptics, do some more research...vegetarinism can be health, if you do it right. Most people get sick because they think "oh no more meat, no more fat...CANDY!!! WOOO" no...that just puts you in the hospital...

Well, except that they're telling people -- women, specifically -- to lay off the heavy-duty soy intake now, because that particular plant manufactures it's own estrogen analogue which can really fuck things up if ingested in high enough doses.
Soy's great for you, just not LOTS of soy. Kind of like how LOTS of fish will give you mercury poisoning. It's not only about creating a balanced diet, but a varied one. That's another problem I found with being a vegetarian, is that you really can't just rely on a couple of recipes and keep recycling those on a daily basis -- the meal planning is extensive, and if you don't have a lot of free time to do that, you're kind of dicked.
Yeah, youre right. I didnt mean like...just soy, though I see now i made it seem that way. Too much of anything will make you sick, but yeah, i shouldve included that too about the meal planning. It kinda sucked at first cuz i was eating...boca burgers and salad my first month. Now ive gone on to different tofu recipes and the like.
