...and so forth...
Happy "Thursday", everyone! :D
Alternate topic: Did anyone else catch that special on [on whatever channel it was] one-hit wonders that dared to include Jimothy Hendrix? That makes as much sense as my grammar, am I right folks?
Alternate Alternate topic: Your favorite one-hit wonder from whatever era. Give me some credit here, I just wanted to say "Happy Thursday"; the rest is up to y'all. Screw you guys, I'm going home.

Lean on Me, motherfucker. Al Withers was a janitor, recorded it, and went back to being a janitor.
I think that's really beautiful.

Are you shitting me? Thats gotta be one of the most inspiring things Ive ever heard about a song.

I mean, I don't know the FULL story behind it, like maybe he tried to do other musical stuff and then failed it.
But the idea of someone deciding to do something, doing it, and then just letting that one action be it, not try to exploit it or change it, is a very sort of Zen/poetic sort of story to me.

favorite one hit wonder, Patience & Prudence with "tonight you belong to me" of 1956.
i think a janitor recording a hit song and then going back to janitorial duties is pretty cool. it implies a sort of humbleness that you don't see often.

"pretty cool" is the way i described it, too.
kyle!
04-20-2006, 04:52 PM
maybe, but without the whole story behind why he did that, it could also imply that he was confident in his destiny to become the champion of all janitors

I can't find anything on him being a janitor. his name is bill withers. it says it came to him while he living in a coal mining town and is based off of church hymns. also, he was in the navy before pursuing his musical career. his stuff is sampled a lot. he also did "just the two of us." the closest he came to anything janitorial is he made toilet seats for a short period of time.
according to vh1 and wikipedia.

now wikipedia is beautiful and inspiring.
but if it's not true then wikipedia is the opposite of beautiful.
Not that that's news or anything.
There is a comic called Frazz that's about a janitor that gets on the top-10 list and continues to be a janitor.

Not that that's news or anything. no, if it's not true then whoever wrote it was a douche, but that doesn't change the fact that an encyclopedia that is completely written and maintained by civilians is pretty cool indeed.

I wouldn't really put Wikipedia and that story (however false it may be) on the same level in terms of inspirational value, but hey, whatever.
implode
04-20-2006, 05:40 PM
neither would i. wikipedia is much more beautiful. it involves cooperation.

But to what end?
By attempting to archive as much information as possible, isn't Wikipedia ultimately failing to acknowledge the uncertainity and finitude that is a defining characteristic of human life?

So hey you still up for that trade thing? I have your package in my hand right now and I'm planning on running it down to the post office tomorrow.

Boss.
I'd completely forgotten about it myself until just recently, so no worries.
Ah, Bill Withers. I always like Aint No Sunshine, too.
Then again, I semi-secretly love songs by crappy random pop bands from 10 years ago, because they amuse me, and make me remember the past and all that. Like Aqua. Ah, those crazy crazy swedish (I think, but I can't be bothered looking it up)people.
