View Full Version : Quick, I need a rundown of the popular kids anime

I just got drafted into helping run a Werewolf the Forsaken booth at the Anime North convention in Toronto next month.

My prediciment, is that I know next to shit about popular current anime (im not there for the anime, Im there to help run a tabletop game, thats all). Since I generally dont hang out with anyone under the age of 17, Im missing out on what 'kids today' watch, and the general age of the convention is going to be 'kids today'.

And Im at work when YTV plays its afterschool cartoons during the weekdays.

So I need your help. If any of you wouldnt mind and could describe a current cartoon anime show people watch and kind of what its about so that I dont look like a complete idiot when these little kids start throwing words and phrases around that I wont understand.

Even one or two sentences about this inyuyasha crap or whatever I hear about would be nice.

What makes you think that a majority of the people there will be under 17? Last con I went too...well there were little kids there....with their parents, and it wasn't the kids who were dressed up as usagi and mamoru. There are usually sections only for people age 18 and OVER, because they sell porn or weapons.
So some advice:

1.)If you see a guy with a paddle yelling something about "prettier than your boyfriend" don't go near...unless your in to that kind of stuff. That's a crazy yaoi guy selling crazy yaoi. There is usually a lot of it, and it's not always marked so beware. Before you know it you'll pick up a magazine and be like "wow that's some pretty fanart of cloud...and there is sephy... Why arn't they wearing any clothes in this one? What are they doing with their swords?...OH GOD!

2.)Watch out for random glompers. Yes, sometimes absolute strangers will come up to you, yell "glomp", and then jump/bear hug/attack you. I only had it done a couple of times by random girls, I havn't seen any guys doing this but I've heard they are out there, if your not in a costume it may not be as likely that you'll get targeted.

3.) Find they guy selling pocky out of his hotel room. There usually is one, it's usually cheap, and god is it worth it. A little illegal maybe, but really if you haven't had pocky by now you havn't lived.

4.)If you arn't used to anime people this may be a little overwhelming. Seeing as how you spelled Inuyasha wrong... Well, you may not understand a lot. Most of what you are going to hear is just people shouting out names of their favorite characters that they see. ex. "omg, that's a satoshi", "it's tidus and yuna", "hey he has the dragon weapon delux". You shouldn't really worry too much about them discussing too much with you. So don't bother to learn anything about individual anime because there is too much to count.

5.)Take pictures. You'll regret it if you don't. When some people dress up they go all out and they usually enjoy you taking pictures of them. Just stop them and ask and they will pose for you. (Somehave practiced a specific pose...) And you'll see some really creative costumes. I seen a bunch of guys dressed as tetris blocks once, and then they lined up, it was really cool. Of course some cosplayers have costumes that are a bit TOO revealing. Also, some wardrobe "malfunctions" have been known to occur. You might develop your film and find out that a guy was wearing nothing under his skirt because he was going up the stairs and....

Oh, and crossplayers run rampant. That guy your talking too may be a chick that has taped down her boobs to a painfull degree so she could look flatchested. And that girl in the child's dress with a lollypop might just have an adam's apple if you look close enough. They will tell you sometimes, but others have a lot of fun leading people on.

Ive never been to an anime convention before, so serious thank yous to that. I know shit all of whats going to be going on around me, all I know how to do is world of darkness tabletop.

If I dont know much about anime... er... are these the sort of people that are going to ignore me for it? Thats mostly why Im trying to get a quick speedthrough, I dont know what to expect.

Im seriously out of the loop on cartoons/anime/ages etc. Any and all help would be appreciated so I dont make a fool out of myself by not knowing these things.

Thank you, deep.

Any others?

Inuyasha starts out with this jewel called the Shikon Jewel, and it's super powerful and can grant wishes and stuff. This priestess named Kikyou guards it. she's in love with a half demon named Inuyasha, and she ends up dying because someone who looks like Inuyasha kills her. she gets pissed and pins him to a tree and then dies. this imposter that killed her is a demon named Naraku, who wants to control the world and stuff. anyway, Kikyou gets reincarnated into a modern day girl named Kagome. she lives in a shrine and one day gets sucked into an ancient well by her house. she ends up in ancient Japan and frees Inuyasha from his enchanted sleep on the tree, and then she finds out that the shikon jewel was somehow inside her, and she ends up breaking it and the shards scatter around the world. she travels with Inuyasha, and eventually a fox demon kid named Shippo, and a perverted monk named Miroku with a wind tunnel in his hand, created by Naraku, and Sango, a demon exterminator who's mad at Naraku for killing her whole village. so they all have to find the shards so that the jewel can become whole again. Kagome is the only one that can sense the shards because she's got priestess powers from Kikyou.

ummm, I think that's about it.

There's a bit off what your going to see.
Believe me there are some people who look very nice in their costumes and then there are others... My god there there was this fat Tifa once who was POPPING out of her costume. It was like seven types of disgusting.
Oh, and some people stay there all week, don't sleep, go to the dance parties, and don't shower. Hygine has become a BIG issue at most conventions and they usually have signs that remind you to bathe.
Try looking at the cons site to find out what is going on there. They usally have a forum for first time convention goers and so you can get advice from people who have gone to that con in that past and know how things run there.

Apparently theres gonna be a bunch of that zentai crap there too that liz mentioned. my friend (who set me up to do this) mentioned the word 'zentai' to me like i wouldnt understand, and scary enough, I knew exactly what she was talking about BECAUSE of liz. It was kind of out of left field that I had the answer on that one.

Okay, so do I have to know my anime or not? Thanks for the rundown on that 'I' show, Takker, are there any other currently popular ones I should know about?

I was debating that, but I wanted to be able to understand a little of the jabber thats going on around me. Just so I know if someone insults me by calling me after some dirty character nobody likes so I can punch the little dweeb in the face.

Davey... please dont ruin Kefka like that. Ever again.

Just look at images for chobits, trigun, full metal alchemist, sailor moon, cowboy bebop, dragon ball, FLCL, gundam, naruto, excel saga, lupin III, samurai champloo, and maybe Tenchi Muyo!. These are some more well known anime that a lot of people will cosplay as. Actually learning about all these is overwhelming though. Your best bet is to just know what some characters look like so you can tell what people are cosplaying as. If you really want to know about some you could try watching them on youtube. FLCL has only six episodes so you could try that. Though it is confusing to even some avid anime watchers.
Most anime on youtube is in Japanese with subtitles. There are usually some conversations about subbing vs. dubbing there at conventions.

Oh and maybe you shouldn't try to learn about Dragon ball, gundam, or tenchi muyo. These are many seasons long with different characters and stories as well as movies.

EDIT: And a lot of the slang is in japanese. Although it's unlikely someone will come up and insult you "baka" is idiot and the most common one used. As well as hentai or itchi (e-chi) which mean pervert.

Mention how great FLCL was and people with think you're some kind of genius and/or masturbate all over you.

If that fails, shout out "SPIKE DIES AT THE END" repeatedly and wait for the comedy to begin.

Thanks Deep, for all the great replies. And everyone else.

I know about Cowboy Bebop, provided its still popular, I can converse fairly well in the adventures of Spike (seen all eps). I just havent seen the movie, but loved the show. So that, vampire hunter d and ghost in the shell (athough since you didnt mention the latter two, im going to assume nobody cares about them anymore) are kind of the only 'aces' i have up my sleeve. Anime I can discuss.

And really old dragonball, like when the pig wished for a pair of underpants. I watched that stuff when I was little.

Unfortunatly, nobody cares about Astroboy. :(

Ill definatly check up on all those characters and animes when I get home tonight. And a HUGE thanks for all the slang explanations, I cant mention how many times ive had the glomping thing said in an msn convo that I just assumed was like 'chomp' only taking a bigger bite. See, tardy little shit like that I dont want to happen at the con.

EDIT: Brilliant idea. I love you, wikipedia, you give me a complete synopsis of all these animes and characters people are talking about.

as for what's most popular at the moment, i've yet to see a day go by on 4chan where there wasn't a naruto, one piece, bleach, or fma thread.

although i think no matter how much you 'study' you're not going to have to or be expected to maintain conversations about anime. if you insist though, maybe try searching for an episode or two of the series listed on youtube.

almost all pictures taken of me by friends or whatever involve my face being completely or at least partially hidden. very, very few were actually taken before i could react.

i kinda like dressing up though. not into cosplaying, but i wear some crazy things from timetotime.

offtopic, today i wore a moose hat to school 'cause it was like hat day. it was in the shape of a moose.
