Have you seen the octopus "birth" with the Offspring playing in the background? I'm not going to find the link now because my six year old sister is in the room, but I'll post it later.

And if that's what your link is, well.

Mine's Japanese art from 1820 depicting a woman having sex with two octopi.

Feel free to link that sucker.

In many countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, octopuses are on the list of experimental animals on which surgery may not be performed without anesthesia.

In 2005 it was reported that some octopuses can walk on two arms on a solid surface, while at the same time imitating a coconut or a clump of seaweed.[2]

Listen to your heart, Liz.

And buy me a mantis shrimp.

Octopi are highly intelligent creatures. They are also devious and evil.

It's probably not ethical to have an octopus unless you're rescuing it from suffering greater than a tank in your room.

Also, I think they like to have toys or something. They'll probably get bored otherwise.

Domo
04-23-2006, 06:45 PM
Klein, I didn't know any of that. That's neat.

KLEIN
04-23-2006, 06:50 PM
Well, it could all be a lie.

But the wikipedia article is pretty informative. There's also neat stuff about their ability to escape from their tanks and into other tanks.

Also, they say that it's octopuses, not octopi, which I was unaware of.

I read a lot about octopuses when I was little (my mom was taking marine biology in college). I guess I forgot a lot. Or I only read kids books so I only learned that "octopuses have eight legs". Or maybe this is stuff that was newly-discovered.

Klein... I dont understand. How can it be 'evil'? Its an animal, would it not just be following instinct?

no, they are pretty fucking evil. but they kick so much ass.

ImWearingUrSkin

reading up on them, they need perfect parameters and my pufferfish would eat it.

Mr lumps, or octopus?

But Mr. Lumps is my baby!

Also, I should feed my little boy's mom to an octopus, not my little boy. Tonight I was on the phone with him and his mom was bitching me out.

Humboldt squid are supposed to be pretty smart, too. Also during mating season/feeding frenzy or whatever time it is, they turn ultra violent and can drag a person several hundered feet under water in an instant. But otherwise they are supposed to be jolly fellows who can communicate by way of flashing colors by manually controllinge ach of the ba-zillions of skin pigments covering their bodies. It's pretty kickass.

Also: they caught video footage of a living giant squid somewhere in Japan. It was blurry and brief, but neat none the less.

octopus change colors, too. The one at the store gets bright red when he's pissed off, and he turns white and flattens himself out when hes scared.

Yeah, I've heard of some kind of blue-ringed octopus that can camoflauge itself and is supposedly extremely poisonous to touch.

A colossal squid would make a neat exotic pet, assuming a living one could be caught and made to surviv ein captivity. You'd need a 1000 meter-deep tank to keep it in, but something that evil has got to be cool.

Okay, Im still not getting this.

How the fuck is it evil? What could an octopus do that is 'evil'? Do they herd the other fish into extermination camps, molest underage whales, what?

Im serious... I read the whole wikipedia article, where is everyone getting 'theyre evil' from other than folklore?

Dr. Badman
04-23-2006, 09:55 PM
They're as evil as spiders and bats are.

Which is not at all outside of symbolism.

Blue Ringed Octopus poison can kill you in about 5 minutes. They're very small, too. I've seen them before in beach rock pools and at teh aquarium.

http://www.taucher.net/redaktion/29/waka/Blue%20Ringed%20Octopus.jpg

But they would look nice in a home fish tank. Perhaps Liz should get one. Just remember: they need love and attention daily. If you are to handle one, rememember to only let it touch your face, throat and upper torso (breathing problems means it's hugging you)...

Octopuses are awesome. I'd get one if I was any good at taking care of fish-things.

If you've kept any exotic pet before, an Octopus wouldnt be much more work. The main thing that anyone selling them would stress is that they are escape artists.

In mydefense, it's hard to tell what's sarcasm on the internet, especially when you're making fun of people, and it is octopuses, not octopi, according to Klein and Wikipedia.

I haven't kept an exotic pet, is the main problem. And the goldfish I have is not in a good way.

I will probably try an octopus as a pet when I grow up and am more responsible.

He is very cute! Very curious. At first I was grossed out at the idea of sticking my hands in the nearby tanks to clean, because I figured his arms would slip through the vents that the water runs through. But after a while, I got around to cleaning the nearby tanks and he would get all excited and push himself up against the side nearest me and stick his arms through and feel my fingers.

My co-worker has him on hold, but they could order me one if I really wanted. Not now though, because I love mr lumps and I'd have to really escape-proof my tank, plus they need perfect parameters and I don't have the money to pay $0.50 per gallon of saltwater for a 50 gallon tank doing all those water changes (With mr. lumps, I use, in salt, $25/ month, and his water is rather atrocious).

(also, that is the weirdest looking vagina ever.)Yeah.

My theory is that this weirdness has been subconciously present in Japanese culture since its beginnings, and one day they finally completely snapped, resulting in the birth of hentai.
