So Nintendo unveiled the official name for the Revolution today. Before I tell you what it is, a little rant. It's amazing how a company can build up expections for their latest product, and then, in a single move, destroy it. I was really looking forward to the Revolution, and I will buy one, but this just makes me feel silly.
With that out of the way, I give you: Nintedo Wii.
Yes, that's right, Wii.
If you're scratching your head trying to figure out how to say it, it's "We". Nintendo explains their reasoning here (http://www.revolutionreport.com/articles/read/407).
Needless to say, my gut churned with pain upon reading this. Nintendo had something great going for them with the Revolution, and they take a proverbial tinkle on it with their...well, Wii. I really want to know what you all think of this.

I think this speaks volumes about the Wii. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v175/krypt0nian/38cc.gif)
Well, the description was predictably fruity (anyone remember the Gamecube being equated to a magic door to a universe filled to bursting with shimmering delights and imaaaaaagination?) and I'm quite used to saying "Nintendo Revolution." But, my face didn't melt off in disgust at the name Wii. After all, it's hardly any dumber a name than "Xbox 360." Very weird, indeed, but then "wee" (piss) jokes I imagine would sound to stupid even to the Live crowd to last long, and if it's undersized it'd hardly be remarkable in the wake of the Gamecube.
Oh well. Maybe their strategy in announcing "Red Steel" off the bat was a preemptive strike against any potential animosity regarding what many I imagine will deem a childish name.
And that's my input.
EDIT: Hey, I hereby predict the coming of countless "Nitnendo WHY??" comments. First time you see a GameFAQs philistine employ this phrase, remember who foretold it.

It's not that the name is really that bad, it's that Nintendo chose Wii over a word like revolution. I mean, come on! Revolution just sounds badass. It's funny that Nintendo had a strong thing going for it and they end up turning themself into the butt of juvenile jokes, again. That's how I feel, anyway.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.
So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.
their description of the name is five times funnier than the name itself.

I just thought it was BIZARRE at first, since it goes against the entire history of Nintendo naming its consoles on 'exactly what it says on the tin' terms. Then when it was confirmed, I decided 'you know what? Despite the huge amount of wee-wee jokes circulating, I actually think this is a GOOD MOVE'.
Why? Because it marks such a huge departure. It is genuinely, genuinely new in this market. It's distinctive, daring and unique. It means that Nintendo's done with 'playing it safe' all this time and is now going all out to be as fundamentally original as possible.
I will look forward to playing with my Wiiiiii...if I can afford it...
(How humiliating, I can't even pay for Wii. All I want is Wii! Is that too much to ask?)
(...okay, I stop now)
Wii is predicted to cost about $250 at launch. (I can always sell a kidney or something for the $500 wallet-raping the PS3 is probably going to bring about.) Still, I wonder what kind of bizarre, 3-screen mayhem will be conjured up by maniacs who wish to use the DS as a Revolution controller. 4 Swords Avdentures 2, mayhaps?

It's not that bad. I don't know how the name of one of their consoles could ruin your respect for a company. The "jokes" and crap the name gets and will get is worse than the name itself. Only immature people think of pee and genitalia. Those people are just making it horrible for everyone. And I really don't agree with the word "Revolution" being "badass". It's so overused, I'm glad Nintendo didn't keep it. Everything includes the word "Revolution" in their titles these days it seems.
Now, it would be better if it were pronounced like "why". But everyone knows that no matter what, things that a group a people don't like will get made fun of SOMEHOW. And we all know there are Nintendo haters. So, I don't think we should really be worrying about the name of a video game console. That's the least of our problems and kind of a waste of time. You know, once the initial confusion is gone, it grows on you. I'm wondering if what others said is true, that this was Nintendo's plan all along. First, they give you a name that confuses you, and they explain it. It sounds dumb at first, but you keep saying it over and over again, until it becomes stuck. Then, it grows on you.
I have to say, that's pretty genius. And it goes farther than calling a console a revolution, because now it is one. We have a console that isn't afraid to have some fun, rather than be XTREME or HARDCORE.
It's also fun to say and distinct. It'll be hard to confuse this name with XBox or Playstation.
Smash Brothers: Wii will decide if I'm going to buy it or not.
Calm down, Trogg. Leet gamers will name it something else. "Double-yew-Double-eye", or something. I'd imagine 'NW' catching on.
Relax, Nintendo hasn't taken to naming every one of their console games since the N64. Now, that's a habit of theirs with handhelds only, it seems. Besides, the whole philosphy behind the name "Wii" seems to be that they want to be as unique as possible, while not being the least self-explanatory. (A rare strategy indeed when it comes to marketing.) But they seemed specifically opposed to calling it "Nintendo Wii", apparently it's just "Wii." (So it's an even greater syllabic shift than I thought. Yargh.)
But as we all know, Nintnedo could call their console anything, including "nintendo shitcan-mobilemoble-anusdrive-turbofetus-bananafone", but their first new mediocre console Pokemon side-story would sell a billion copies.

Psh, innovation. Whatever happened to sticking to the beaten path? It's beaten for a REASON, Nintendo!
That's what Sony and Microsoft's vasty-more-powerful systems are doing. Nintnedo's angle is to be weird and noticeable; if the Wii were just a more powerful Gamecube, it probbaly wouldn't be getting the attention it's getting.

Like I said on Toonzone, it's a lot like our first reactions to the Freehand: when you first find out about it it seems weird and unusual, but the more you think about it the more it grows on you.
It's distinctive, which is GOOD in a crowded marketplace. They presumably announced it now so that everyone could get the jokes out of their system. Then they'd get bored and look at their options come this Christmas: which would they want? The sleek sterile goes-with-the-IKEA-living-room 'Playstation 3'? The rad xtreme mondo-corporate-image-biznatch 'XBox 360'? Or a fun little machine named 'Wii'?
Seriously, think about it, which of those names sounds like something you'd like to buy?

What's different about the Wii?
IMO there haven't been any big breakthroughs since N64/PS did the 3D gameplay thing. Since then it's just BETTER GRAPHICS, which don't mean a whole lot to me anyways. And all the systems have such great graphics nowadays... the differences are so small. It's all a stupid race. Personally, I have my PS1 and my N64. I also have a Gamecube which my brother bought me for my birthday a year ago which has never been hooked up.
The only other thing that might be a breakthrough, IMO, is maybe the interactive/online gaming, which I haven't done much of. But other than that... I actually prefer the N64 over the XBOX.
Yeah, Nintendo told Game Informer that they wanted to let the name be known prior to E3 so people would have gotten over the weirdness; that way they'll focus more on the games and functionality of the system. People were pretty dubious about the name "DS" at one point too, y'know.
What's different about the Wii?
The Wii's big innovations are the motion-sensetive one-handed controller, the "virtual consoles", and presumably some other big secrets they've yet to let on about. I would definitely assume some kind of DS-as-a-peripheral thing, though.
Yes, it's true that the days of companies putting the bit number on the box are long over, and the graphical improvements over current-gen systems won't be as dramatic as, say, SNES to N64 or Saturn to Dreamcast. (At least not immediately, but looking at some upcoming PS3 games might suggest otherwise.) Better graphics certainly aren't the deciding factor in whether the game is good or not, but they definitely help. I mean, compare Silent Hill 3 with the original on PSX (Same goes for Metal Gear Solid). Also, games like Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter have such detailed surroundings and models that it's hard to take older 3D games like Spyro or Crash Bandicoot as seriously. Not only that, but faster processors and beefy hard drives= quicker online play, shorter load times, and a general boost in performance.
Plus, you can have like 8 controllers in the same room WITHOUT WIRES BEING EVERYWHERE. I, personally, am eagerly awaiting that situation.
ImWearingUrSkin
04-28-2006, 08:30 AM
Well that was all jargon to me. I don't keep up with this modern newfangled videogame nonsense. I've heard of a DS but I don't know what it is, for instance.
Ah. Well, in summary: Sony and Microsoft are bulking up their systems to be as fast and shiny as possible, but Nintendo wants to innovate so that they can stay relatively inexpensive and still grab some attention in the crowded market.
The DS (Dual Screen) is Nintendo's latest handheld system. Since their older handhelds connected to the N64 and Gamecube in some manner, I assume they'll be doing the same with the new system.

Answers:
Nintendo sees the console "race" in the same way you do. They have left the "race" to Microsoft and Sony, extolling new kinds and methods of gameplay over graphics. Their new controller is essentially a 3-D mouse, with the appearence of a remote control (only with many fewer buttons). It reacts to many sorts of movements, including aiming, swinging motions, and many sorts of rotational motions.
It is like nothing you have ever seen.

Well you get the point.I'm still using the first PS1 Dual Shock I bought on my PS2 - where I can, anyway. Most of the latest games require a Dual Shock 2, which have shoulder buttons that break ridiculously easy.
I'm pretty much over consoles. I think I'll skip this generation...
I just cleaned off my old ps1 controller for the first time ever. It was pretty nasty but it still worked fine. Somehow years and years worth of pop spills and cheeto dust plus some other unidentifiable crytalized substance still wasn't enough to drag it down.
My ps2 controller got a sticky x button in like 2 months, and I don't want to talk about those damn shoulder buttons.
Huh, my Dualshock 2 still works fine, shoulder buttons and all. My only complaint is that it's slightly less comfortable than the Gamecube controller.

I don't think that's the point of the Wii.
And yeah, Snake isn't a first-party Nintendo character, but he's been on three Nintendo games. So. Yeah.

Snaku...Snaku? SNAKU!
Looks like Wii has the 3rd party support the GC needed, and then some. I mean, just about every company is announcing a new title for the Wii. Wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft announced Halo: Wii Edition at this point, heh.

Maybe small chance that this is just because the game is not finished but it looks like the graphics are gettting worse. The sand is pixelated. It seems like the only games that look good are ps3 ones.
I'm not buying this thing. I know the controller is supposed to make it more intresting but I'm not really intrested at all in how the game is played. These are all new versions to games everyone has played already anyway. There was a period of time when you could new and creative types of actual video games to come out every year, instead of having to rely on advancements in the hand held controller industry. They aren't even trying any more. They know they can make more money if they squeeze every last cent out of the franchise that already exists.

Dude, every screenshot you see right now for ANY Wii game is gonna be one that's still in hyper beta-form. They aren't going to look very polished at this state.

Also, the graphics are getting better, not worse.

I've seen beta games for new consoles that have good graphics. It was about 5 am when I was looking that stuff up though. The early morning makes most things look worse than they do now.

Companies definitely like to milk franchises for all they're worth, but people keep buying them. Look at any sales chart around the release of a game in the GTA, Mega Man, or Madden series, and you're sure to find at least 2 of the top 10 games being filled by versions of those games. (Particularly with Madden, jeez.) But, there are still plenty of original IPs poping up here and there; even original series like God of War and Guitar Hero have started pretty late into their repsective system's lifespan. ANd some "new and original" games turn out to be lame, like Death Jr. and Kameo. Besides, even old systems had tons of derivitive stuff.
And. Calm yourself, whodaimen.
