View Full Version : build me a playlist

i'm putting together a playlist of rockin' songs to drive to.

so far, in no particular order, i have:

Gin and Juice (a cover of the Snoop Dogg song, it's by The Gourds)
Pump It (Louder), Black Eyed Peas
Living After Midnight, Judas Priest
Radar Love, Golden Earring
Low Rider, War
The Inevitable Return of the Great White Dope, Bloodhound Gang
Seven Nation Army, The White Stripes
The Trumpet (Part II), Lou Bega (yeah yeah, stfu)
Torpedoes, MDFMK
School's Out, Alice Cooper
Jungle Boogie, Kool and the Gang.

you can choose from one or more of the following:

1. praise me for my awesome taste in music
2. suggest some more similar songs (i am planning on adding some more, this is rather short as is, if your suggestion is good it will go on here. i will probably also raid some Tarantino flick soundtracks.)
3. arrange these songs in your preferred order.

the last one is the one i'm most interested. i have some ideas, but i think it'd be neat to see what other people hear in these songs.

Night driving music:

1) Pink Moon- Nick Drake
2) Winning the Battle, Losing the War- Kings of Convenience
3) Polaris- Zero 7

By then, you will have fallen asleep by the wheel and crashed into a tree or maybe a tiny soldier.

Torpedoes, MDFMK
fuuuuuuck.

I kneeeew there was someone else in the world who listened to them. (Yeah, it's essentialy the same as KMFDM... but the album is kinda tricky to find...for me it was, anyways).

Nice choice.

And since Rev mentioned night driving....

Ring of Fire - Wall of Voodoo.

Best night driving song. Hands down.

sex dwarf - soft cell
dancing in the moonlight (it's caught me in its spotlight) - thin lizzy
change- blind melon
yellow ledbetter - pearl jam
right turn - alice mudgarden
andy's chest - lou reed

oh, and I know you're most interested in order, and whatnot Koba, but I'm only familiar with like...three of the songs on your list!

Queen Bitch - Bowie
Mixed Business - Beck
Into The Fire - Dokken
Soilbleed - Grendel (maybe)
Pro-Test - Skinny Puppy

I'm not too terribly good at these things.

Does "Little Razorblade" by The Pink Spiders count? It's not really similar and I only bring it up because it's stuck in my head and it seems like something I'd enjoy listening to on a car ride.

so download that shit, man. i promise you they're all good.

night driving might end up being another list. this is for "i'm on my way to work in the morning" type stuff.

Road Tapes are fun. I used to make one whenever we'd take a road trip.

Daytime driving - Little Bones, Tragically Hip
Nighttime driving - Mudflap Girl, Timbuk3

I only know about half the songs on your list, so I can't really take a shot at arranging them.

Just for the record, I <i>vastly</i> prefer MDFMK to KMFDM. "Hydroelectric" is one of my favorite songs evar.

Hey Koba. I attest that you need to add some <a href=http://www.venushum.com>Venus Hum</a> up in that business. Prime cruising music. It's not the best example of their breadth, but you can get <a href=http://www.venushum.com/sections/music/mp3s/BigBeautifulSky/SoulSloshing.mp3>"Soul Sloshing"</a> for free on their website. I would recommend "Honey" from the same album if you can track it down.

No "Seven Nation Army"; save RAtM, but amend that to "War Within A Breath".

Add: 311 - "All Mixed Up"; Modest Mouse - "Shit Luck"; Weezer - "Photograph"; Green Day - "Panic Song"; Red Hot Chilli Peppers - "Danny California"; At the Drive-In - Enfilade; Gorillaz - "Punk" ...

... I stop here.

there are plans in the making for a "historical/timewarp" party in my quite, where we dress in our preferred historical/vintage outfits and rock out (and of course get pretty drunk). i'm pretty much the unofficial DJ of the semester it seems (as in i build the playlist based on my own rockin' tastes and my suitemates' suggestions and then hook up my laptop to another suitemate's speakers), so that means i need some good historical tunes.

and i'm going to head this one off at the pass:

<b>If you suggest "the timewarp" from Rocky Horror, I will eat your face.</b>

so far i have:

1985 (Bowling for Soup)
American Pie (Don McLean)
Jailhouse Rock (Elvis Presley)
Rock Around the Clock (Bill Haley and the Comets)
Party Like It's 1999 (Prince)
Tequila (The Champs)
That's The Way I Like It (KC and the Sunshine Band)
Cars (Gary Numan)
Video Killed the Radio Star (Buggles)
Mambo Number 8 (Perez Prado)
ABC (The Jackson Five)

so basically music that:

1) Outright references a year
2) is really dated and telling of its age, whether or not the song is famous
3) is a famous oldie
4) a good party song

I have some vintage recordings of Gershwin tunes, as well as a bunch of Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman CDs.

any suggestions?

TIMEWA-.... I mean, how 'bout some'a 'dis classic nonsense:

Metallica- "Master of Puppets"/"Welcome Home (Sanitarium)"
Grateful Dead- "Casey Jones"
Pink Floyd- "One of These Days" (Maybe also "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" if your group will have the collective attention span)
Bon Jovi- "Let it Rock"(I'd recommend starting the rockingness off with this. It's about ROCKING fer chrissake.)
Dokken- "Mr. Scary" (the live 'Beast From the East' version is a bit more hyper, but the original 'Back for the Attack' version rocks pretty hard, too.)

Oh! I Will Survive! I only have the Cake version, which is awesome, but the original would probably work better given the circumstances.

And I Can't Dance by Genesis. I have a soft spot for that song.

Oasis?
Presidents of the U.S.A - Peaches
Run D.M.C. - Tricky
The Who - My Generation

That's just the stuff I have (not that you can't tell by the alphabetical order or nothing)

Driving songs, id have to recommend 'Drive' by Halford. Rob Halford used to be the big man of Judas Priest, until he quit, came out as gay, and put out one really hardcore album on his own that had two songs ranking in the top 100 metal or something.

Every time I hear that song, I expect Lewis Black to come out of nowhere and start amusing us with angry insites. That day never seems to come. :(

PS: Apparently - according to this woman off Rover's Morning Glory - Osama Bin Laden makes people strip dance to "Rock Lobster" by the B-52's. Now every time I hear <I>this</I> song, it makes it even funnier.
