When I have a kid, I'm probably going to give them either a unique first name and normal middle name, or the other way around. That way when they get older they'll have a choice: if they hate the less common name, they can use the boring one.

That's actually kind of how my names are. I have a common first name and an uncommon middle name. The reason for it is different, though. My parents wanted to name me after both of my grandfathers.
