one of my best friends escaped to japan to study for a year. she came back a year ago, and now she trains dolphins in hawaii for a living and lives in a little hut on the beach and is super happy and everything (for serious). i guess she really "found herself" over there in a way she never could here.

guess what i'm trying to say is, this is gonna be so awesome for you. enjoy the hell out of it, lady; i'm jealous!

Christ and now I'm in California until like August of next year. How long you there for? If I go to Korea any time this decade, we must hang out from time to time.

well, I'll probably be over there again. the scholarship I got is from the government is requiring me to work for one year after graduating. they'll probably send me back to japan to work in the consular offices.

ami, I don't think I could even fit an air matress into the room I'll be getting... but seriously, if you want to sleep standing up with me then come visit. :)

And I'm about 300 miles north of Monterey.

Not that anyone would care, of course. I just...like to say things sometimes.

Oh yeah, and congratulations on going to Japan. I really want to go as well.

I care. I love the entire Pacific coastline to an unhealthy degree. Where you at?

Rohnert Park, about ten miles south of Santa Rosa and 45 minutes north of San Francisco.

I assume it's named that because there is a park in every neighborhood. Usually filled with drugs.

I'm afraid I have to second this inquiry. Maybe it's just that I'm in Monterey on an Army base, but I'm not exactly endeared to the place. You'll have to show me it's secrets. Also one of these weekends maybe I can visit you, because time spent away from the Presidio is invariably time well spent. The only issue I can see with you coming here is I don't know a good place for the purposes of lodging, and civilians can't stay on the base itself. I'll have to look into local motels/hostels etc. But yeah we should hang out post-haste.

Oh Japan. Seriously though, all these people I know go there, for legitimate working/studying reasons, but I don't get most of the fascination. Alien culture, maybe? Sounds like your excited though, and I'm sure you'll have heaps of fun, I've just been looking through photos from my friend Jess who's studying neuroscience over there (she is from Canada-towne too!), and she has been having a blast.

welp, any culture has its just about equal amount of atrocities, buuuuuut I like some of their way of thinking.. and yummy food, and pretty landscapes, and WACKINESS. but you know. I'm also a little worried about isolationism and you know how they love/hate thing for foreigners. but lol whatev

Jess was telling me about 'Tokyo Bananas', which she just bought for some of her workmates, which are apparently "little cakes shaped like bananas, filled with banana pudding", which sounds really good, if they aren't that icky fake banana flavouring they use for medicine and that. The concept intrigues me.

Anyway, long story short is I want delicious cake from Japan.

yeah, they have specialty stores and kiosks for those in the larger trainstations. i'd pass like two of them every time i went through shinjukueki to catch my train to school.

they're okay. it's hard to find sweets as we know them in the west in japan, since our sorta sweetness was never really in classical japanese cooking. (hence red bean and green tea and soy sauce being the most popular snack flavors.) there is some amazing food in japan though, and they do have some pretty amazing french-style bakeries which are often too good to be true.

War crimes, anime, either way rape is inevitably going to be a recurring theme.
