Assuming this isn't some kind of new slang I'm not familiar with, Jiffy Pop is a brand of stovetop popcorn.
Edit:
Okay, according to Urban Dictionary, jiffy pop is a slang term, but I'm going with my original answer.

everything is a slang term.
actually, most everything can be a slang term with at least one sexual meaning.
Even the term "prepositional phrase"?

aw i love jiffypop
i mean it's not especially delicious or anything but it's probably the only type of food thats marketability depends solely on the consumer having to put more effort than usual into its preparation, which is pretty neat i guess
EDIT: it's popcorn. it comes in a little tinfoil pan that you pop on the stove.
it's a genius method

i only ask because i was going to roast some over a campfire the other day, and when i went to the supermarket and saw they had none, i asked some employees there, and they were like "jiffypop...? i have no idea what you're saying." and i thought i was going crazy for a second.

They used to sell that here, I've tried it once when I was like 8. I didn't realize at the time that it only really works on gas stovetops so it turned out to be a miserable failure.

I know of that type of popcorn, but seeing as I wouldn't bother doing that, no I don't know the brand names.

but yeah i've kind of grown to hate smartfood over the past few months, what with handling it every day and whatnot. (i am going to talk about my new job now, and it probably won't be funny or interesting so u kno fyi) it's the newest addition to the factory so it's actually more efficiently designed than everything else, which hasn't really been seriously updated since the 70's and behaves as such. smartfood, in contrast, is this nice, efficient, chrome plated little offshoot of the factory which has AC that actually works very well and the bags come out all warm so they're easier to handle and the lines are spaced out properly so you have enough room to work and it's just wonderful.
the thing that ruins it is the filthiness of the ishidas. considering you don't know what that is i will show you, it is one of these:

you see, the chips come down from the allen level (the top floor, after the chips are cooked and seasoned they come "over the wall" into the allen, which are essentially giant vibrating trays that make sure the chips don't all stick together and that the seasoning is more evenly distributed) into the ishidas. the ishidas work by programming them to distribute a certain weight worth of food, and also by finishing the job of the allens by vibrating to get the last few resiliant chips to stop sticking together. the food comes down through the ishidas (which are located on the 2nd floor) into the bagmaker and then out onto the lines where i work. it's all very clever and if frito wasn't so secretive then i'd suggest that they do an episode of "how it's made" about it.
unfortunately, almost every shift there's a changeover, where we switch which product we're running on a certain ishida (or just stop running product altogether) and they need to be cleaned to a certain degree. if it's just a switch to something similar, like regular lays to regular ruffles, we just have to do a quick wipe on the ishida, which is exactly what it sounds like and not all that bad. but if there's a color change (say, sour cream & onion to barbecue) or even worse an allergen (like cool ranch doritos are made with milk but nacho isn't) since people can be deathly allergic to dairy, we have to do a ridiculously good job of cleaning them.
this sucks because it's fucking hot up there and they get really really nasty with like inch-thick layers of seasoning and all of the corners are sharp so you cut yourself and there's no headroom if you're even marginally tall so you end up hitting your head on the machine overhang which is also inexplicably rather sharp like 6 times and yelling about how you're going to fucking quit if you hit your head once more and then end up hitting it 3 more times so you have a headache while you're eating your words and you have to do such a good job that the whole process takes up to 2 and a half hours (which you generally only have to do 1 hour of, but still) and blarg it is gay gay gay.
but yeah, the smartfood ones are probably the grossest ones at our factory (we don't make cheetos but i bet those are worse) because the seasoning dries pretty quick and everything is all buttery and greasy and gross and we have to do shutdowns on it like once every two weeks so people have to stay late cleaning it alllll up and yeah. shit sucks. SO EVERY TIME YOU ENJOY YOUR SMARTFOOD THINK OF HOW MANY POOR FELLOWS HAD TO HIT THEIR HEAD SO YOU COULD ENJOY YOUR MIDAFTERNOON SNACK
lol i'm sorry to anyone who actually just read all of that hoping for something funny or interesting i just wanted to get it all out for some reason
steffi

get a degree and get a better job, cory. or don't get a degree and get a skill based hippie job. why don't you work in a library or something that doesn't require physical injury?
implode
06-16-2008, 08:17 AM
because libraries don't pay as much as factories, and i need to make as much money as possible right now considering my girlfriend isn't working and we both smoke and have to pay for gas and want to eventually (within a few months) get a place together and whatnot.
which is also part of the reason why it's not really feasible to get a degree right now. or ever, i suppose. i mean, that's not really it, i'm just lazy and hate homework and hate having to be obligated to be anywhere every day, let alone both work and school. but i guess it's the part of it that i would tell people that i didn't know/like enough to be completely honest with.
frito pays pretty well - $16 an hour. it's nothing compared to people who have a degree, of course, but to an unskilled (well, i know how to cook but there's no money in that either for the most part) laborer it's a great starting wage.

It's a thankless job, but I'm glad someone is willing to package our favorite snack foods. Starting pay isn't too bad for working in a hot, greasy factory, either. Hopefully you'll find a less stressful job, though.
