yeah, it's pretty nuts. this guy has some compositions that you can pick apart and see how they work: http://www.zugakousaku.com/index.html?jp-qclab. and this other guy keeps a pretty decent log of tutorials on vimeo, and his links section is actually useful: http://www.hybridvisuals.nl/category/tutorials/
if you want to just really quickly hook it up to itunes or something to use audio triggering, <a href=http://www.cycling74.com/products/soundflower>soundflower</a> is great.

also, since this thread is becoming vjchat now, I have to namedrop <a href=http://www.centerforvisualmusic.org/>center for visual music</a>. they are the repository for all that is good concerning abstract freakout visuals set to music

I need to look at this more in depth later, but this is sweet. I wish they'd have screenings somewhere closer than NY, though.

I wish I had the discipline and patience - if not just the simple artistic talent - to learn something like this. I'd continue to watch more of these videos, but I don't see a point considering I don't have a clue about even the smallest stepping stone about the field itself. "It looks fucking cool", is all I can offer, and maybe a "holy shit I admire you" for good measure.

pffff, as if I do. :P I am the hack to end all hacks.
just found this awesome directory of all the patches available with the Quartz public release - really helped sort things out for me regarding how to hook things up to controllers and whatnot: http://kineme.net/wiki/PublicPatchReference

Riiiight, Ami. You're only one of the most artisticly talented people on the board. That doesn't count for anything, sure.

haha, I sure am glad I started posting those links here, I just lost all my damn bookmarks
I know a little vdmx, but I can't get it to run reliably on my machine. I think I need to do some upgrading before it'll work properly. lemme see what I can dig up, I remember there being a really good stash of tutorial stuff on vimeo
vdmx is boss*, it's like it's made specifically for qc users. you can trigger quartz patches from right in the thing, then add video effects over it. you can make some crazy layered compositions with it. I wish I could get the damn thing working. :(
edit: except for the whole costing $300 part. still QC is free, so it kind of evens out to pretty cheap in the end

okay I think I'm gonna give up on vdmx for the time being and start learning <a href=http://www.modul8.ch/>modul8</a>. seems roughly the same, looks like I can use quartz files direct through it too
exemplary citizen
08-29-2009, 09:59 PM
huh, found a weird thing that ended up being kind of useful - there's this tutorial on how to do "god rays" for quick motion graphics in final cut, which can also use quartz directly for rendering. the final cut thing isn't particularly useful, but if you download the student files there's a whole folder full of quartz patches for doing backlit light rays

I tweaked with the "flying fish" script from Quartz Lab, which seems to be down at the moment

I'm trying to rig it now so that keyboard presses get me bursts of different colored bunnies instead of the even lfo interpolation i'm using (which you can see repeating)

i tweaked the image blur default one so the directional control was up down left right arrow keys, and then again so it made an automated circle using two lfos but i dont think thats interesting enough to upload

i love what you did with the flying fish one! i need to figure out getting images in there correctly. did you just export those bunnies as pngs with transparency to get that effect?

Soks.
exemplary citizen
09-03-2009, 11:19 AM
yeah, the bunnies are just transparent pngs, same size and resolution as the flying fish, and I replaced the clouds with some photos of skies that I took in portland (looked softer). if you go into the image importer patch, there's a "load from file" thingy in the settings. only lets you overwrite what's in there already though, so I'd save a version before doing anything like that.
